A young friend told me she has too many problems to be happy. I understand. The trouble is that we will always have problems in this life. So is there a way to be happy in the midst of problems? The answer is “yes.” Here are some ways.
GIVE THANKS FOR EVERY LITTLE BLESSING. Your face. Your teeth. Your legs. Your clothes. Your life. Your friends. Clean water. Food. A bed. Sunshine. Flowers. Air. Books. Coffee. Smiles. Safety. Beauty. Puppies. And so on.
CHOOSE WHAT SATISFIES INSTEAD OF WHAT IS PLEASURABLE. It may be more fun to eat three desserts (!!) but it is more satisfying to restrain yourself.
DO YOUR CHORES BEFORE YOU PLAY. Getting your chores out of the way FIRST gives you freedom to enjoy the rest of your day.
SERVE OTHERS. Not because you have to serve them, nor so they will be indebted to you, but serve those who CANNOT pay you back. Serving others allows you to forget about yourself for a while. It is a VERY satisfying feeling.
FIND SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF. This is where God comes in. If you live for yourself, you will never EVER be happy. However, if you give your life to God and begin to serve him – happiness will sneak up on you without your even noticing.
BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. After entrusting yourself to Jesus Christ, ask him to fill you with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth and healing. Not only will he begin to heal your soul, but he will also comfort you with knowledge of the love of God IN SPITE OF how you behave at times.
FORGIVE THOSE WHO HAVE HURT YOU. To forgive is essential to being happy. To forgive is to give up the right to hurt back. To forgive is to give that person over to God. To forgive is to desire that person’s soul to be healed too. Say out-loud, “In the name of Jesus Christ, I forgive (name that person) and I let him go.”
