Psychologists say that fear and love are the two basic human emotions. I feel sure that if you had X-ray vision to see inside everyone on planet earth, you would find almost all people experiencing some form of worry, anxiety, or fear RIGHT NOW.
Jesus said, “LET NOT YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED, NEITHER LET THEM BE AFRAID” (John 14:27).
This was surely one of his most startling statements. How is “not being afraid” possible in our fear-drenched world?
By means of an INFLOW OF DIVINE PEACE AND LOVE.
Jesus prefaced his above statement with these words: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”
Where did Jesus’ own peace come from? I believe it was NOT just a supernatural addendum to his life as the Son of God.
Rather, his peace (which even allowed him to sleep in the midst of a storm), came because his CONFIDENCE RESTED in God as his Father.
Jesus knew who he was IN GOD. His confidence rested, NOT IN HIMSELF as the Son of God, but in his Heavenly Father. We too can have his same peace and for that same reason.
We can REST in the finished work of Jesus Christ in his cross, resurrection, and ascension.
We can REST in our place in God – SONS and DAUGHTERS through our faith in Jesus.
We can REST in having been justified by God (given Jesus’ A+).
We can REST in God’s determination and power to KEEP us saved.
We can REST in God himself. “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:3).
As we REST IN GOD, we receive a continuing flow of the LOVE of God. It is the inflow of God’s LOVE that “CASTS OUT ALL FEAR” (1 John 4:18).
When I feel afraid, I pull my attention away from what upsets me, and inwardly retreat to God. I ask God for help to do so.
One by one, I begin to release my troubles to him. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
Often I have to do this repeatedly.
As I come back to a place of REST in God, then by faith, I ask for and inwardly receive a fresh inflow of love.
Supernaturally, a sense of wholeness begins to return. Fear dissipates and I enjoy feelings of peace and safety, surrendered to the almighty care of God.
Feeling loved and protected, I find my heart inclined towards trust and humility.
Out of this yielding, love then flows as a power, in and around me. It seems almost like I am in a bubble of love.
This sense of being upheld by grace easily helps me ABIDE in the flow of love. Then, as I abide in love, not only is FEAR dispelled, but love for GOD and a willingness to love OTHERS appears.
There is no avoiding times of fear – but I have learned we do not need to LIVE in it.
