Honoring the Holy Spirit

If you are experiencing God then you are experiencing the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is “God on earth.”

Perhaps that is why Jesus said that every sin and blasphemy of human beings will be forgiven – EXCEPT to blaspheme (treat with contempt) the Holy Spirit (see Matthew 12:31).

The Holy Spirit is God. To welcome the Holy Spirit is to welcome God. To hinder the Holy Spirit is to hinder God. To grieve the Holy Spirit is to grieve God. To honor the Holy Spirit is to honor God.

WHAT DOES GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT CONSIDER TO BE HONORING?

PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGING JESUS CHRIST AS LORD.
1 Corinthians 12:3 I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

INVITING THE HOLY SPIRIT INTO EVERY SITUATION.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT’S POWER.
Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…

LISTENING TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.
John 14:25-26 These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit …

WELCOMING THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
1 Corinthians 14:1 Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

MINISTERING ONE TO ANOTHER IN LOVE.
1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

SINGING WITH SONGS OF THE SPIRIT IN GRATITUDE TO GOD.
Colossians 3:16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

KEEPING IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT.
Galatians 5:16; 25 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh… Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

ALLOWING THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT TO GROW.
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

MAINTAINING THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT THROUGH THE BOND OF PEACE.
Ephesians 4:3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

SPEAKING ONE TO ANOTHER IN HELPFUL, NOT HURTFUL, WAYS.
Ephesians 4:29-31 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
