When it is Dangerous to be a Christian

A young man has asked me, “Will Jesus keep me safe if I become a Christian?” This young man lives in a VERY hostile environment. He told me he would be killed if he should be found out. He knew of no other Christians. Anywhere.

While I wanted to assure him of safety, I could not. This is what I said to him. “Once you commit yourself to Jesus your life will be in HIS hands from that point on – to do with as he pleases. But even if you should be martyred for your faith in Jesus, you WILL be kept safe for eternity.”

He made his decision. He chose Christ. Joyfully.

This article is written for him and any others who find themselves in similar situations.

I believe God permits certain people to be SECRET FOLLOWERS OF JESUS. Up to a point. There will undoubtedly come a time when God calls you to be Christ’s witness even when it is dangerous to do so.

Nowhere in Scripture are Christ’s followers told to seek martyrdom. You are NOT to throw your life away foolishly. Still, the time will come when you must take your stand for Jesus Christ.

HOW THEN ARE YOU TO LIVE AS A SECRET DISCIPLE OF JESUS? It seems to me that you should devote yourself to the following six things.

(1) Spend as much time as possible in PRIVATE WORSHIP. You can do this in your own mind and heart. Ideally, you can take time alone by yourself to tell Jesus how much you love him and to give him thanks for EVERYTHING you can think of.

This can become such a habit that even without thinking, during your day as you work at your tasks, you can find yourself whispering your love to Jesus from within your own spirit.

Ask God to give you a supernatural prayer language. The Bible calls this “speaking in tongues.” This will be a personal way of uttering your heart-thoughts directly to Jesus.

You can sing or pray in this language softly and no one else need hear. This is a very important way to strengthen yourself in the Lord. It is definitely worth seeking and believing for.

(2) Develop a pattern of READING IN THE BIBLE. It may be dangerous for you to have a printed Bible, but you can find the Bible online. I use Bible Gateway https://www.biblegateway.com/ personally. At the top right you will find a scroll bar to choose a Bible translation from many, many languages.

If you are new to reading the Bible, I strongly suggest you begin with the GOSPEL OF LUKE, then every day read until you have read through the entire New Testament.

Once you have accomplished that, I suggest you make a habit of reading three chapters daily. One from the Old Testament (start in Genesis), one from Psalms and Proverbs, and one from the New Testament (start in Matthew).

Each day, read one chapter of each section. This is a way you can read continually in the Bible for the rest of your life.

(3) Daily, ask and believe God to be FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Seek to LIVE your days filled with the Holy Spirit’ love, life, and power. The indwelling Holy Spirit is Jesus’ way of giving you counsel and comfort.

He will warn you of things to stay away from. He will also warmly encourage you of good things to take action with.

When you feel the inner HESITATION from the Holy Spirit, STOP. Pay attention. By doing so, you will stay out of a lot of trouble.

You will learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit on the inside. This “inner voice” of God is NEVER condemning, harsh, panicked, or silly. Instead, his voice carries with it a quality of thought that makes a deep inner impression of calmness and authority.

(4) Begin to learn to DO THE THINGS JESUS TAUGHT. You will find the life and teaching of Jesus Christ in the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You will also find a summary of his teachings in what is called the “Sermon on the Mount,” Matthew chapters 5-7, and Luke chapter 6.

Do not be discouraged. You will fail at carrying out his teachings at first, probably a lot, until the Holy Spirit really begins to get his way with you. All believers fail at times, but we claim the forgiveness Jesus Christ offers us and we begin again.

Following Jesus is not a matter of perfection, but of PROGRESS.

A wonderful movie that may help you is the JESUS FILM. It is available in over 1700 languages. The link below is to the Arabic version, but underneath the title screen you will find the volume symbol with your choice of the many languages available.

(5) Be aware that THERE IS A DEVIL and evil spirits who will try to discourage you from your commitment to Christ.

This demonic attack against your faith will usually takes the form of inner condemnation when you sin, or outright trouble and persecution rising from your relationship with Christ, or your own apathy that sets in as you get distracted by the things of this world.

Cry out to Jesus when you find these things happening. His Holy Spirit will speak to you and encourage you.

When you become aware of the presence of an evil spirit, take the authority of Jesus and rebuke that spirit. Out loud, address that spirit in the name of Jesus, and COMMAND it to go! The Bible teaches, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

When you find you have sinned, admit it to God quickly. Ask him to forgive you, for the sake of Jesus, and to teach you how to do better.

Then finish your prayer by saying, “Thank you, Father, that because of the shed blood of Jesus, you have forgiven me!”

The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Also, please be aware that when you are first converted, God may give you a great sense of his presence and love. You will feel God with you and have much comfort. Eventually though, these feelings will begin to fade. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG.

This is simply God’s way of teaching you to live by FAITH in Jesus, not by FEELINGS of faith. The comfort and joy of his presence will return, I promise you. Your job is to continue to TRUST Jesus and obey him.

(6) Finally, look for opportunities to LOVE people. Usually, this will take the form of serving others, without expecting anything in return. Jesus taught, “Do for others what you would have them do for you” (Matthew 7:12).

The love of God inside you towards others will also take the form of silently praying God’s blessings upon them.

Love will also move you to be quick to forgive other people their faults. God has forgiven your sins – you must forgive those who sin against you.

As you learn to live each day in the close presence of Jesus, you will take on a calmness of mind and an overall happiness that other people will begin to notice. You will not be as angry or worried like before.

When people ask, “What has happened to you?” simply say, “God is with me and is helping me.”

Eventually, you may trust someone enough to tell him or her about Jesus. You will know when to do this by the HOLY SPIRIT NUDGING YOU on the inside.

It is God’s plan and desire to save human beings. You are his chosen instrument and you will find that God will draw others to you, so that at some point in time, they too can receive Jesus!
